The U14 Girls (all 18 of them) started their first competitive match season in 2017 with the Division 5 league, Feile and Cup competitions.
The league started early 2017 and consisted of 10 teams and after 9 exciting games were unfortunate to be pipped into a very respective fourth place.
The Division 6 Group A Feile was hosted in our own back yard, Westmanstown and the day of group games was exciting as ever. Some fantastic skill and team spirit were shown by the team, so much so that they won all their group games. The semifinal beckoned and we were up against a very strong Templeogue Synge Street from Group B. After some nail-biting moments and resolute defending our forward line got us over the line to the final.
The following day we travelled to Trinity Gaels who were hosting the final where we were paired up against our local rivals, Erin go Bragh.
Our captain, Katie Murphy led by example and player of the tournament, Maeve Gleeson put in a superb performance as did all the team to beat our neighbours and win the Cup.
Following our win the Feile, we went on to compete in the National Feile in Monaghan in June. A slow start saw us lose the first game but two wins followed which set us up for a semifinal on the Saturday against St Ergnat’s Moneyglass.
Unfortunately, while we battled hard and left everything out on the pitch the girls were overcome by the eventual Division 4 National Feile winners.
After the summer we came back to training to prepare us for the Cup competition. We started off with a good win against Castleknock B but were well beaten by an exceptionally strong Foxrock Cabinteely C team. We gathered ourselves for the final game and managed to get a win over a very good Raheny B side. This set us up for a semifinal against the other Group winners, Round Towers C. The girls gave it their all but unfortunately were just shy and lost out.
Since the summer we have several new recruits and the team now numbers 25, which bodes well for the future.
The plan for the remainder of the 2017 season is to continue to build on our skillset and arrange a few end of season friendlies finishing off with some festive fun and crack before the Xmas holidays.
Overall the 2017 season has been a fantastic success for the girls, their parents whose support is and always will be invaluable and the club.
Next year will be another cracking year with league and cup competitions plus the defence of the Feile Cup. Fundraising activities will commence early 2018 in relation to the kit the girls will wear for the Feile competition.
